On larva of Elateridae (Coleoptera).
Description:
Stroma arising from head region of Coleoptera larva.
Fertile head globose to subglobose, 4-8 × 4-7 mm, light brown when fresh, chestnut brown when dry. Stipe light brown, inside hollow, 3-5 cm long, 2-3 mm wide.
Perithecia obpyriform, crowded, 800-1200 × 300-380 μm, completely immersed.
Asci hyaline, cylindrical, eight-spored, up to 500 × 3-5 μm. Ascospores hyaline, filiform, multi-septate, breaking into 64 cylindrical part-spores, 5-10 × 1-2 μm.
Culture characteristics:
Colony on PDA in 30 d at 25°C approximately 1 cm in diam, white, velvety, with depression on the colony edges, colonies reverse uncolored. Mycelium smooth-walled, septate, hyaline. Conidiogenous cells from aerial mycelium phialidic. Phialides solitary or in whorls of 2–3, swollen at the base or slightly flask-shaped, 5–10 × 2–3 μm, tapering into short phialide necks, 1–4 × 1 μm. Conidia hyaline, smooth, aseptate. Conidia distinctly of two types, mostly cylindrical, 5–11 × 1.5–2 μm, fusiform, 3–5 × 1–1.5 μm. Poor sporulation was observed.
