Description:
Stroma arising from between the head and pronotum of adult worker of Polyrhachis armata, simple, solitary, pale-yellow, yellow-orange to orange, 5-9.7 cm long. Fertile heads terminal, obpyriform, ovoid with yellow to yellow orange to orange, ostioles slightly protruding on the surface of the ascomata, 1-3 × 0.9-2 mm.
Perithecia obliquely immersed, ovoid, obclavate, 600-820 × 170-280 μm.
Asci hyaline, cylindric, capitate, 415-575 × 5-7 μm. Asci-caps rounded, 4.5-7 × 6-8 μm.
Ascospores hyaline, filiform, multi-septate and breaking into 64 part-spores, 415-500 × 1-2 μm. Part-spores hyaline, barrel-shaped, allantoid, cylindrical with truncated apices, 6-18 × 1-2 μm.
Culture characteristics:
Colonies growing on PDA slowly, ca 13.3 mm diam after ca 12 wk at 25 °C, at first white turning to pale-yellow , slightly convex, dense aerial hyphae, yellow synnemata produced after ca 3 wk becoming yellow-orange at the top with white
conidia after ca 6 wk.
Conidiogenous cells (phialides) pigmented, orange, clavate, obclavate, denticles, stout, protuberant, 6–14 × 2–7 μm. Conidia solitary, single cells, smooth-walled, pigmented, obovoid, cymbiform, 3–10 × 1–2 μm. The underside of the colonies is brown to dark brown.
