Holotype:

GHANA.

Habitat:

Leaf litter.

Host:

On Hymenoptera (ant).

Description:

Synnema multiple, arising from the head, thorax, and abdomen of ants, cylindrical, simple, up to 10 mm long, 80–200 μm wide. Stipes black or blackish-brown becoming moderate orange yellow below the fertile head, cells outside of stipe smooth-walled, composed of parallel hyphae being dark brown and becoming pale toward the fertile heads, 3–4 μm wide. Fertile head at the apex of synnemata, composed of tightly packed phialides making the hymenial layer, 20–25 μm, subglobose to globose, occasionally ovate, 300–800 μm diam and about 320–700 μm long, cream, white when fresh. Conidiophores mostly biverticillate, in minor proportion divaricate, occasionally irregularly branched with phialides growing directly from conidiophores. Conidiogenous cells phialidic, forming a hymenial layer. Phialides solitary or in whorls of two to four on each branch, cylindrical with papillate end, 5–20 × 1–3 μm, periclinal thickenings and collarettes absent. Conidia, fusiform to obclavate, single, 4–8 × 1.5– 3 μm.

Culture characteristics:

Colonies on PDA attaining a diam of 10–15 mm in 30 d, circular, with raised, dense mycelium, white to light yellowish brown. Synnema determinate, produced in the middle of colony, cylindrical, black to brown becoming light pink below the fertile heads, up to 12 mm long, 150–200 μm wide. Sporulation occurring at the apex of synnemata, with white conidial bloom. Conidiogenous cells phialidic, forming a hymenial layer. Phialides solitary or in whorls of two to four on each branch, cylindrical with papillate end, 4–25 × 1–2 μm, periclinal thickenings and collarettes absent. Conidia fusiform to obclavate, in dry chains, 4–7 × 1–3 μm.
