Description:

Stromata solitary and simple on Coleoptera (Scarabæidae) larvae. Stipe dark-brown to purple-brown, fleshy, cylindrical, up to 100 mm long, 1–1.5 mm diam, enlarging abruptly at fertile head. Fertile head single, terminal, pale cream-brown when immature, becoming cocoa-brown or purple-brown to purpleblack, elliptical to fusiform, 15–45 × 2–4 mm. Perithecia crowded, fully immersed, tightly packed in ordinal orientation, ostioles brown, obclavate, 340–430 × 120–230 μm. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical, 150–220 × 5–10 μm, apex tip 3.5–5 × 5–7.5 μm. Ascospores smooth, filiform, hyaline, 3-septate, 110–165 μm long, breaking easily into four partspores, 32–45 × 2–2.5 μm.


Culture characteristics:

This is a fastidious species, cannot be cultured.
