Description:
Multiple stromata arising from the thoracic and abdominal regions of the lepidopteran larva (body size 5-8 × 2-3 mm). Stromata cylindrical to clavate, up to 12 mm long and 1-1.5 mm broad. Upper part of the stroma fertile, orange, 4-7 × 1.5-2 mm. Perithecia superficial, densely packed, narrowly ovoid, 350-460 × 100-200 μm. Asci cylindrical, 8-spored, up to 320 μm long, 4-5 μm wide, apex and bottom of asci thicker than the middle part. Ascospores hyaline,whole, bola-shaped, 3- or 4-septate, 225-320 × 1-1.5 μm, central part filiform, terminal part narrowly fusiform, 25-30 × 1.5-2 μm.
Culture characteristics:
Colonies on PDA moderately fast-growing, ca 3 cm diam in 14 d at 25 °C, at first white with basal felt, becoming pale yellow with grayish violet in the center of colony, cottony with high mycelial density, reverse unpigmented. Prostrate hyphae smooth, septate, hyaline, 2–2.5 μm diam. Conidial structures consisting of erect conidiophores arising from either the aerial or prostrate hyphae, verticillate with phialides in whorls of two to five. Phialides 6–10 × 2–2.5 μm, with a cylindrical basal portion, tapering into a thin neck, 1–4 × 0.5 μm. Conidia in chains, hyaline, fusiform, 1-celled, 3.5–5 × 2–2.5 μm. Chlamydospores and synnemata not observed.
