Buried in soil.
Host:
Lepidoptera larvae.
Description:
Stromata solitary or multiple, branched, 15–30 mm high, 0.9–3 mm wide, fleshy, orange, cylindrical, Rhizoids flexuous, arising from the head region of host larvae buried in soil, ca. 30 mm deep under the ground.
Fertile part pale orange to fresh orange, variably clavate to flattened clavate or obclavate, 2–8 mm long, 1.2–4 mm wide.
Perithecia superficial with one-quarter to one-third immersed, elongate ellipsoid to elongate ovoid, 290–570 μm long, 120–245 μm wide, perithecial wall two-layered, inner wall hyaline with a thin orange outer layer.
Asci hyaline, cylindric, capitate, 8-spored, 290–410 × 5–6 μm.
Ascospores whole, hyaline, filiform, multi-septate, 280–390 × 1 μm.
Culture characteristics:
Colony on PDA attaining a diam of 25 mm in 10 d, white, reverse cream.
Phialides solitary, gradually tapering from the base to the apex, 7–32 × 1–2 μm. Conidial arrangement evlachovaea-like.
Conidia hyaline, oblong-elliptical, smooth, one-celled, 3–6 × 1.5–2 μm.
