Description:
Basidiomes globose or subglobose, submerged, sessile, becoming superficial, 10–22 mm. in diam., smooth surface with few soil stick particles, splitting to become star-shaped when old; basal mycelium consisting of brown vinaceous or bay rhizomorphs. Outer peridium yellowish brown, consisting of several layers, ≤1 mm. when dry, at maturity splitting into 4–6 broad. Endoperidium sessile, subglobose, ca. 13–25 mm. broad, yellowish brown to brownish, opening by irregular apical mouth, lacking defined peristome. Gleba frequently brown, columella none; capillitium of long, branched, interwoven, hyaline, aseptate, slightly encrusted, threads 2–6 μm in diam.; thin-walled with a narrow continuous lumen; clamp-connections occasional, usually absent. Basidospores globose, 6–10 μm in diam. including ornamentation, brown, ornamented with moderately dense, rounded, long, narrow, connate spines, 1–3 μm long.
