Scale insects (Coccidae; Hemiptera).
Description:
Stromata epibiotic, flattened to convex, consisting of dense white mycelial mat, upper surface yellow to very pale purple-violet, 5-12 mm long, 3-8 mm wide.
Perithecia semi-immersed, crowded, ovoid, 300-420 × 100-150 μm.
Asci cylindrical, up to 240 × 2-4 μm. Asci caps 2-4 × 3-4 μm.
Ascospores hyaline, whole, filiform, aseptate, 100-220 × 1-1.5 μm.
Culture characteristics:
Colony on PDA attaining a diam of 2.5–3.5 cm in 14 d, slightly convex to the agar surface, vivid orange with white in the middle of colony, reverse strong reddish orange, bright moderate reddish orange pigment diffusing in medium. Phialides arising from aerial hyphae, solitary, cylindrical or acremonium-like, slightly curved, up to 55 μm long, 1–2 μm. wide. Conidia hyaline, enteroblastic, fusiform to acerose, aseptate, aggregated at the apex of the phialides, 5–18 × 1.5–3 μm.
